Why I Started Writing Again (And Why I'm Putting It Here)

There's a version of this post where I explain everything in one clean paragraph. The pivot, the reason, the theme, the grand vision. But I've learned to distrust that kind of writing — the kind where everything makes sense from the first sentence and nothing costs anything. So let me try a different version. The real version: I came back to writing after a season when most of what I'd built — professionally, personally, structurally — fell apart in ways I didn't fully anticipate and couldn't entirely control. What followed was a few years of quiet reconstruction. Less visible than what came before. More foundational than anything I'd done in my adult life. I kept journals. I drafted things I never posted. I wrote letters to people I didn't send. Writing was the rope I held onto when the current was strong, and I don't say that to be dramatic — I say it because it's the truest description I have. Eventually, the season shifted. Recovery does that: it moves slowly, and then it moves. You look up one day and notice you're standing somewhere different than where you were, and the ground beneath you feels more solid than it has in a long time. When that happens, you start making things again. Why this space: I already write on Substack and Medium. I have a main site at EricProtas.com. I'm on LinkedIn and YouTube. But there's something about a blog — an old-fashioned, searchable, chronological record of thought — that I wanted to have in my own name. This space will hold: Reflections on recovery — personal, honest, and written from inside the experience rather than above it Faith and meaning-making — the kind of spirituality that doesn't require you to have it all figured out Intentional living — practical essays on showing up, building habits, and choosing the life you're actually living Advocacy — writing that uses lived experience to create room for others on a similar road I'm not writing here to perform expertise. I'm writing here because I think clearly when I write, and because clarity — the kind you can actually stand on — is worth sharing. A note on voice: I write the way I talk: directly, without a lot of unnecessary softening, but with care for the person on the other side of the screen. I won't dress things up to make them easier. I also won't make them darker than they are. Recovery taught me something about accurate perception. Not pessimism, not toxic positivity — just the discipline of seeing things as they actually are and then deciding what to do with that. That practice shows up in how I write. If that sounds like your kind of reading, I'm glad you're here. You can follow along on this blog, subscribe to my Substack for essays delivered to your inbox, or connect with me on LinkedIn or YouTube for different formats of the same conversation.
